Completion of subsea wells and installation of the Christmas trees are traditionally performed by a drilling rig. As part of a client driven global strategy to evaluate alternative lower cost solutions a study to run the upper completion from a DP monohull vessel, typically Island Constructor has been carried out.
The study involved vessel capabilities for handling, running of the upper completion string, barrier philosophy and installation of the Christmas tree. The study has involved client personnel, casing/tubing supplier, handling equipment suppliers, DNV and TIOS personnel both in Norway and in Aberdeen.
The project report has been completed with the general conclusion that no showstoppers were identified for the use of open water completion technology.
